The following questions & answers are filled with important information you need to know to arrive fully prepared for your adventure with Family Lines Fly Fishing Academy. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
What should I bring?
Fly Fishing is an outdoor activity, so come prepared for mountain weather conditions which can change without warning. We recommend casual outdoor clothing appropriate for the season with extra layers, a hat, and a rain jacket. A weather forecast for the area can be viewed by clicking HERE.
Lunch, Beverages and Snacks: If you’re planning to make and bring your own lunch, it should be prepared and with you when you arrive. A water bottle (or camel back for wade trips) is nice to have also.
If you’re signed up for a lesson and would prefer to purchase your lunch and eat on-site either before or afterward, Mountain Springs Lodge offers a delicious menu of sandwiches and salads (check menu HERE for days and times the grill is open). Other options are the Old Mill Café in Plain or the 59er Diner at Coles Corner (Hwy 2).
If you’d like to purchase a fresh-made deli sandwich for a guided trip in the field, we highly recommend the deli at Dan’s Market in Leavenworth: (509) 548-5611 . We think they have the best sandwiches for the price in town!
Personal Items: Other personal items we recommend include a camera, sunscreen/lip balm, and any personal medications you may need during the day. Be sure to bring a billed hat and sunglasses with a retainer strap (polarized sunglasses if you have them), these are important fishing safety items.
Liability/Med form (e-sign online or print & sign): For medical emergency contact and insurance purposes, all FLFFA participants are required to agree to and sign our Liability/Med form prior to the commencement of the lesson or guided fishing trip. If you choose to wait and fill this out when you arrive please arrive 15 minutes early. Because our start times often impact other guests we will not delay our start time to wait for you.
Additionally for guided fishing:
WDFW Fishing Car Pass and/or WA Discover Pass parking tag (more info on that below)
Current WA State fishing license (must be with you when you’re fishing). You can purchase a single day or multiple day license HERE
What is not included in the fee?

It is required for the second day only of our “Fun on the Fly 2-day Combo”, as well as our “Mountain Streams” and “Yakima” guide trips. You can purchase a single day or multiple day license HERE.
Parking charges and/or shuttle fees for personal vehicles on guided trips (will vary by destination & season)
What is included in the fee?
The knowledge and expertise of a professional guide or instructor
All fly-fishing equipment (rods & reels, lines, leaders, tippet, flies)
For guided trips in the field:
Wading gear (if required): waders & safety belt, wading boots. Plus, for walk-n-wade trips: a wading staff, fishing vest and landing net. If you’re borrowing gear we’ll need some measurements in advance. Contact us for gear reservations and sizing.
Fully-equipped professional fishing raft (if required), with dry gear bags for storing your extra clothes, etc.
How do I request and confirm a reservation?
Indicate your interest through FLFFA’s contact form. Requests are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Once received we will contact you to discuss your workshop or trip and then email you an invoice. When payment is received, we will email you confirming your reservation.
COVID-19 Protocol & Requirements
Please review these guidelines set forth by the governors and WDFW office:
Will my cell phone work?
Many locations where we teach and fish have cell reception but many have no reception (which may be a good thing if you're looking to disconnect). Your actual reception quality will depend on which service provider you use and our specific location at any given time throughout the day
What if I have a medical condition or need medication during a lesson or guided trip?
If you have a medical condition that in any way may impact – or be impacted by – the planned fly-fishing activity, we need to know in advance via email. We’ll contact you with any questions. When you arrive, remind FLFFA’s instructor or guide. All medical information will be kept in strict confidence and will only be released in the case of emergency to authorized medical personnel. If you need to take medication during the activity, be sure you have it with you and let us know if we can help.
Do I need to arrange transportation
Transportation to and from lessons and guided fishing is not included. There is no charge for parking at Mountain Springs Lodge or other locations in Plain.
For guided fishing, your guide will arrange to meet you at a pre-arranged location. Clients may save costs by using their own vehicles for shuttles. Note that for some locations, a vehicle pass is required, e.g., WDFW, WA Discovery Pass, or NW Forest Pass. A day or annual WA State Discover Pass can be purchased online and printed out as late as the day of the lesson/trip.
What about tipping?
Gratuities are completely at your discretion based on the quality of your experience. Tips are awesome but FLFFA staff do not expect them and are here to serve regardless! As with other service-based industries, the industry standard is 10-15%. Tips should be given in cash directly to the instructor at the conclusion of the lesson or trip. We thank you and sincerely appreciate your generosity.
